OVERVIEW
Ivana Chubbuck is a master teacher in the truest sense and is returning to 16th Street to teach a one-week masterclass in the cutting-edge Chubbuck Technique for highly experienced actors.
Ivana is well known for working with the biggest A-list actors in Hollywood including Academy Award winners and nominees Halle Berry, Brad Pitt, Charlize Theron, Terence Howard, Jake Gyllenhaal, Elisabeth Shue, Catherine Keener, Kate Hudson, Jon Voight and Djimon Honsou, as well as Jim Carrey and Jessica Alba. Her Australian masterclasses have attracted some of the most experienced actors in the country and audited by hundreds of others – all equally blown away by her incredible insight and ability to transform an actor’s performance. Ivana is not content with a good performance she seeks greatness in the work and the actor.
Halle Berry attributes her Academy Award winning performance in Monster’s Ball to her work with Ivana:
"Ivana Chubbuck is the premiere acting coach of the twenty-first century. Her astute knowledge of the human condition, coupled with her ability to translate that insight to her students, is remarkable. Ivana's innovative methods of teaching both complement and rival those methods of the great teachers of the past. Her philosophy transcends what we once knew about the art and forces actors through their own catharsis to discover authentic ways of bringing the complexity of life to the screen and stage. Under Ivana's tutelage, the course of my career and depth of my work have changed dramatically.”
Ivana is the founder and director of the Ivana Chubbuck Studio in Hollywood and has been featured in such publications as The New York Times, Vanity Fair, People, USA Today and The London Times.
She has been profiled on "Entertainment Tonight", "Today Show Australia", CBC, E! and the BBC and published the hugely popular The Power of the Actor: The Chubbuck Technique.
This is a rare opportunity to work with a true master teacher.
COURSE CONTENT
The Chubbuck Technique builds on teaching traditions that stretch back to Stanislavski and infuses them with current advances in behavioral science and psychology.
Ivana's work goes to the source of what motivates human behavior in order to recreate real human behavior and truly be in the scene. She looks at the psyche of the character in the script to see how that particular character negotiates life. Then, using the Chubbuck Technique, she will teach you to replicate the character from your own personal needs and life experiences to create a character that is vivid, authentic and living and breathing in the moment.
"We go to the movies, watch TV and go to the theater to see, not the ordinary or dull, but extraordinary people - how a person dealing with pain and trauma overcomes and wins, by using that pain as a fuel. This is what I teach." Ivana Chubbuck.
The course is rigorous and requires considerable rehearsal time before the masterclass.
What is required of participants?
There are 32 places available on the program and entry is by selection decided by a panel and based on your previous experience, aptitude and a showreel.
Actors are paired with a partner, allocated a scene, given a copy of The Power of The Actor and expected to thoroughly rehearse and prepare their scene ahead of the masterclass. Dramaturgical and rehearsal support is given by 16th Street under the guidance of Kim Krejus to assist in preparation leading up to the masterclass.
What is auditing?
Many actors in the United States audit (observe) acting classes as an opportunity to improve their acting craft and gain a thorough insight into an acting technique. 16th Street is offering an opportunity to audit our International masterclasses in Australia – a phenomenal learning opportunity and a genuine masterclass in itself. Auditing is not simply an act of ‘watching’ performers work but rather an active process in which fellow actors thoroughly experience and learn a technique through observation and analysis.
