OVERVIEW
"Larry's unwavering commitment to his craft, his encyclopedic knowledge of the arts, and his sincere enthusiasm for the art of acting itself make his process exciting, inspiring and truly transformational as an actor." Leonardo DiCaprio
Larry has the ability to connect actors to themselves and the characters they play by taking them into the world of the writer with a passionate commitment to tell the story. He picks up the mantle from Stella Adler and Sandy Meisner (both of whom he trained with) and unleashes the actor's imagination, resulting in performances that are powerful, authentic and career changing.
"Truth is his goal, for it serves the world. His heart and vision are crystals of impeccable knowledge which transform the actors who are blessed enough to work with him." Juliette Binoche
This is a rare opportunity to work with one of the world's true master teachers.
SYDNEY & MELBOURNE
We are excited to offer this Masterclass in both Sydney and Melbourne this year.
AN INTERVIEW WITH LARRY
SCENE STUDY
There are 28 places in each masterclass for actors to work on acclaimed plays. Larry has a passion for superior writing and believes it is only with such material that an actor can be challenged and grow.
Larry's incredible ability to identify the given circumstances of the play and the world a character inhabits allows him to guide actors in revealing the meaning of a play. Through this, he illuminates the structure, language and technical craft required to meet these demands with a focus on the power and importance of the actors' voice and body.
Larry's work liberates and inspires actors through his abiding respect for the writer and the play, and a belief that actors are in service of something much greater than themselves.
LIMITED MUSICAL THEATRE PLACES
We are happy to announce 4 places are available for highly-skilled musical theatre actors to work with Larry in each masterclass, learning how to interpret a song and give meaning to a character's objective.
Learning how to deliver a 'monologue' (be it through song or text) is a valuable tool for all actors to learn, and is the basis for Larry's approach to acting for musical theatre. Beginning with an actor's physical life on stage, Larry breaks down the text or lyrics and encourages the actor to make personal choices as the performer. This focus on story, personalisation and imagination gives actors a limitless combination to tap into, and a focus that allows the performer to reach their potential.
Upon winning her 2011 Tony Award for best actress in the musical Anything Goes, Sutton Foster thanked Larry personally for helping her find her character, Reno Sweeney.
Watch Larry coach a young actress to perform the title song from Cabaret, on the CBC TV series Triple Sensation.
Larry's breadth of experience as a teacher and director is second to none and actors under his tutelage develop richness in their work, deepening their approach to the craft. This masterclass combination will ensure a dynamic experience for all participants and auditors alike.
"Larry continues to inspire me to search fearlessly for the truth in the character I am playing and in myself as a human being. I am in awe of this profoundly gifted, articulate teacher." Hilary Swank
Participating in the program
ACTING
Participants are carefully paired and allocated a scene. You will be provided a copy of Larry's book, The Intent to Live to read before you begin a thorough rehearsal process.
SINGING
Participants will be allocated a song based on their vocal range and appropriateness of character. You will be provided a copy of Larry's book, The Intent to Live to read before you begin a thorough rehearsal process. An accompanist will be provided for the Masterclass.
Entry is by selection (based on previous experience and /or a showreel). Please note; as there are very limited places for musical theatre actors, professional experience is essential. This will be the most beneficial scenario for performers and auditors. If you are beginning your career in musical theatre we strongly encourage you to audit, as both the acting and singing elements of the masterclass will inform your work as an actor.
Auditing the program
Many actors in the USA audit (observe) acting classes as an opportunity to improve their acting craft and gain a thorough insight into an acting technique – a phenomenal learning opportunity and a genuine masterclass in itself. Auditing is not simply an act of 'watching' performers work with Larry, but rather an active process in which fellow actors thoroughly experience and learn Larry's approach through observation and analysis.
We encourage all auditors to read Larry's book, The Intent to Live prior to the masterclass, to have a solid understanding of the process and enhance the overall learning experience of the course.
"Working with Larry is thrilling, challenging, inspiring, occasionally frustrating, endlessly interesting, and always exhilarating." Toby Maguire
