OVERVIEW

These classes apply the principles of renowned American acting coach Ivana Chubbuck and her technique for scene work. This technique will strengthen and enhance an actor’s work by drawing on the personal world of the actor and focuses particularly on empowering actors (and characters) to win.

Classes are led by teachers trained and endorsed by the Ivana Chubbuck Studio, indeed by Ivana herself. Actors are guided on all aspects of the Chubbuck Technique in both theory and application, with intensive feedback given for the re-working of scenes between classes.

PROGRAM CONTENT

The Chubbuck Technique uses behavioural science and psychology to discover the ‘who am I?’ of the character. Ivana's work goes to the source of what motivates human behaviour, especially our need to win. It is a system that demands an actor make fearless choices, and empowers them to use their own pain to win their scene objective.

This approach demands fearlessness of an actor in order that they reveal characters at their most dynamic and inspiring. Great people in life become so through their desire to win and a willingness to overcome personal and external obstacles. It is this quality that impels audiences to films and theatre - it offers us an opportunity to see life at its most compelling. We are inspired by stories not for mirroring life (rarely they do), but for offering us a glimpse of triumph in the face of adversity, redemption from past pain, or catharsis evolving from anguish.

These classes are ongoing and run continuously. They are crafted for actors who wish to continue training on a weekly basis through scene work, with a minimum commitment of 8 consecutive weeks. A place in this program becomes available when an actor leaves the course.

Actors are specifically allocated scenes and scene partners. These must be thoroughly rehearsed before they are put up in class. Actors will then use the guidance and instruction of the class to work the scene before it is put up in class.

ALLOCATED CLASSES

We take great care to ensure all actors are working in a challenging environment. To accommodate levels of professional experience and training, all new applicants to the studio meet with the Creative Director before being allocated the appropriate class.
