‘We go to the movies, watch TV and go to the theatre to see, not the ordinary or dull, but extraordinary people – how a person dealing with pain and trauma overcomes and wins, by using that pain as a fuel. This is what I teach.’ – Ivana Chubbuck.
16th Street Actors Studio continues its tradition of bringing the greatest acting teachers from around the world in Masterclasses and Ivana Chubbuck is a Master Teacher in the truest sense.
The Chubbuck Technique builds on teaching traditions that stretch back to Stanislavski and infuses them with current advances in behavioural science and psychology.
Ivana’s work goes to the source of what motivates human behaviour in order to recreate real behaviours and be truly in the scene.
The Chubbuck Technique has been used by actors, writers and directors worldwide to great success and awards.
Ivana Chubbuck speaks about her upcoming Masterclass in Melbourne
Ivana looks at the psyche of the character in the script to see how that particular character negotiates life. She uses her cutting edge technique to empower actors to bring characters to life who are driven to overcome adversity and triumph against the odds.
Actors will work on scenes from plays and films.
‘Ivana Chubbuck has changed my life and career. I know without her and her extraordinary technique I may not have had a career as an actor. Her work in analysis is phenomenal. She has taught me how to bring myself fully into each role. My gratitude to this woman, my mentor and teacher, is immense. If you have an opportunity to work with Ivana when she is in Melbourne in January, you must grab it with both hands.’ – Australian Actor Travis Fimmel, The Vikings

What can make or break the success of a play, television show and movie, are the actors. No matter how beautiful the visuals are, or how well it is choreographed, if the actors aren’t an essential part of creating the vision it could fall flat. Therefore, the director needs to be able to have the proper tools to create the most effective communication with their actors, so together, as a unit, they can tell the story the director wants to tell, quickly and cohesively. There needs to be a common language, a way to trigger the best performances.
Ivana deeply understands the demands of the director having coached and collaborated with them throughout her 30 plus year career. She began as a screenwriter for Universal Studios after graduating Film School and went on to coach many highly successful directors across Film, Television and Theatre.
Ivana will work with the directors and help them express their vision of the story to the actors, utilising the Chubbuck Technique. Therefore creating a more profound experience for the director, the actor and most importantly, the audience.
‘The worst moment a director can experience is when a scene isn’t working and the actors and crew are staring at you for answers — and you don’t have any. The Chubbuck method has helped me to never be at a loss for words on set. Not just words, but the right words. Ivana has given me a practical set of tools, not only to troubleshoot problematic scenes, but to help my actors prepare for their roles. Directing without a workable method is like going to war without a gun. Thank you Ivana!’ – David Ayer Training Day (Oscar nomination), Fast and Furious, Harsh Times (starring, Christian Bale), End of Watch (starring, Jake Gyllenhaal) Fury (starring Brad Pitt)

Audit this Masterclass
Auditing, or observing, a Masterclass is commonplace in studios across the United States. Auditors use these experiences as an opportunity to develop their craft in acting and directing and gain a deeper insight into an acting technique. Auditing is not simply an act of watching participants work with Ivana, but rather an active process in which fellow actors and directors experience and learn Ivana’s approach through observation and analysis.
You will learn about the Chubbuck Technique by watching Ivana work with professional Actors on day one. Then on day two Ivana will work with the Directors on how to implement this work in order to illicit the best performance. Then on day three and four both the actors and directors will return having applied Ivana’s specific direction and notes. Ivana will then continue working with them, uncovering more of the scene and deepening the work.
