BACKGROUND

Harry Haynes is a director, producer and educator whose work moves at the intersection of rigorous actor training and bold contemporary theatre directing. As the Associate Artistic Director of 16th Street Actors Studio, Harry is a driving force behind the studio’s artistic vision, developing new programs, nurturing emerging talent, and shaping the next generation ofAustralian actors and directors.


Trained in London and deeply influenced by the European and British traditions Harry was the recipient of The Sir John Gielgud Award and was awarded the Leverhulme award for excellence in Performing Arts. Harry’s work is built on a foundation of ensemble, psychological detail, and a commitment to human-centred storytelling. His directing spans intimate chamber pieces to ambitious, immersive worlds. From 2018 he has made Theatre under the moniker The Liminal Space highlights include the acclaimed immersive two part theatre event MYSTERIES with Creative Victoria, City of Melbourne and Testing Grounds and the world premier of CYGNETS with Theatre Works which received multiple 5 star reviews.

He is a founding director of Company 16, a respiratory theatre company that provides intergenerational exchange between established main stage actors and Australia’s most talented recent graduate actors. As Co-Director recent work includes directing a critically acclaimed modern adaptation of Miss Julie set in a Greek fine-dining kitchen, and producing Company 16’s production of John Logan’s RED.

PHILOSOPHY

At 16th Street, Harry leads curriculum development, oversees major program innovations including the Director’s Apprenticeship Apprenticeship and evolving Full-Time Program. Harry mentors actors and directors through hands on craft-driven training. His teaching is shaped by a deep engagement with Yat Malmgren’s Movement Psychology, Stanislavski, Chekhov, and contemporary rehearsal methodologies centred on vulnerability, presence, and character transformation.


His work is underpinned by an ongoing PhD exploring pedagogies of vulnerability in acting and rehearsal, and by a lifelong drive to build bridges between emerging talent and the international theatre community. Above all, Harry is committed to fostering a culture of excellence, generosity, and craft one that honours tradition while championing new voices, new ideas, and the evolving landscape of performance.
