This two-day workshop is designed for emerging and early-career theatre makers who want to create new work for live performance and build an independent artistic practice.

Participants are encouraged to ask what makes a work necessary and how that sense of purpose shapes artistic choices, collaborations and the development of a long-term practice. The masterclass considers how a body of work evolves, how new work is understood within Australia's performing arts sector, and how those understandings influence funding and programming.

The workshop is taught through case studies drawn from Emma's own practice, including creative development processes, production documentation, grant applications, budgets and touring conversations. These trace projects from early ideas to presentation and form the basis for discussion, practical exercises and critical reflection throughout the masterclass.

Sustainability runs throughout the workshop. It encompasses artistic development, financial sustainability, disability and access, mentorship, community, reciprocity, care, and respectful relationships with collaborators, audiences, communities and place. These considerations inform every stage of developing new work and building an independent artistic practice.
