HOW TO: CHEKOV, THE WORKSHOP

Chekhov’s plays revolutionised the stage by replacing "heroes and villains" with ensemble casts of ordinary, flawed people. He famously focused on undercurrents, what is not being said is often more important than the dialogue itself.  ‘How To: Chekhov’ will introduce you to techniques that illuminate his delicate worlds and begin to understand his dark cosmic humour. Whether you’re portraying a wildly disillusioned young artist, a jaded literary hero or another lost soul caught in the quiet unraveling of time.

Working on Chekhov's careful satire has the potential to dignify your stage acting with granular psychological detail and to populate your on screen performances with radically truthful idiosyncrasy. Through practical exercises, deep text exploration and scene study, you’ll develop the sensitivity to uncover subtext, listen actively in the silences and inhabit characters who reveal themselves through restraint rather than outburst. This work forces you to build a rich, internal monologue that runs parallel to the spoken text.

ANTON CHEKOV

Chekhov quietly revolutionised the global theatre scene at the turn of the 20th century, cementing his legacy as the architect of modern psychological drama. His works, performed in every corner of the world, pulse with a delicate, "hidden" energy, doctors, disillusioned intellectuals, bored aristocrats, and yearning dreamers collide in Chekhov’s theatrical universe, where time is both a vanishing gift and a prison of stagnation. His plays are charged with a diagnostic wit, clinical empathy, and a haunting lyricism, redefining what it means to portray the ordinary, the failed, and the resilient on stage.

From the chaotic, youthful frustration of The Seagull to the primal domestic reckonings of Uncle Vanya, Three Sisters and his final masterpiece The Cherry Orchard, Chekhov shatters the boundaries of plot-driven drama. His stories and later plays, like the devastating Ward No. 6 and the rarely discussed The Wood Demon (an early, more traditional version of Vanya), reveal a writer unafraid to wrestle with the passage of time, the decay of social structures, and the inescapable truth that life is lived in the small moments between the grand tragedies.
