FULL TIME ACTING PROGRAM
Our conservatory-based 30-week acting program.
We encourage actors to celebrate their unique talent, dare to grow and be courageous – to be all they are capable of being.
The Professional Full Time Acting Program at 16th Street Actors Studio based in Melbourne prepares passionate actors with the skill to work professionally on the Australian and global stage in theatre and in film.
16th Street introduces actors to the world’s finest and most highly regarded acting techniques. The studio brings the wisdom of the past together with the cutting-edge learnings of the present. We inspire the very best in the actors we train for their future in art, their profession and in life.
16th Street graduates are specifically trained to be heard above the noise in a very competitive market.
The Full Time Professional Acting Program is led by award-winning theatre director and Head of Acting Iain Sinclair, Artistic Director, Kim Krejus, Associate Artistic Director Harry Haynes, and an experienced ensemble of industry professionals and teachers.
During the course, full-time actors will also have the opportunity to apprentice our theatre company – Company 16, designed to give novice actors the chance to work alongside experienced professional actors to further develop their technical skills and craft.
16th Street Actors Studio fosters discipline, dedication, curiosity and respect for the craft of acting.
We provide actors with a vibrant and compassionate community in which to learn and grow.
Actors are professionally mentored to navigate challenges with wisdom, resilience and grace.
We believe an actor’s development as a human being is intimately connected with their artistic potential.
“Whenever I am directing film or theatre, I seek out graduates of 16th Street because I know they will deliver.”
— Nadia Tass, Award-Winning Theatre & Film Director.
TERM 1
-
The actors' journey begins with developing and expanding self-awareness, including habits and behaviours that inhibit creative expression and joy.
The focus of term one is to connect actors to their breath, body, instincts, feelings and willpower. To expand their sense of identity and sources of creativity.
Actors train in voice, movement and physical expression, story structure, ensemble work, yoga and meditation. They’ll also receive an introduction to complementary American and British Acting Techniques.
On the completion of term one, actors have access to a broader range of vocal, physical, imaginative and emotional choices in preparation for dynamic scene work and character transformation.
TERM 2
-
Term two develops a healthy and vibrant professional practice. As well as artistic and technical skills, 16th Street fosters an attitude of empathy and curiosity towards the world in which we live.
Through scene study, actors are introduced to heightened and Australian contemporary text to develop their understanding of story structure, language and technical skills.
Actors train in script analysis, psychological and physical transformation, dramatic action, emotional preparation and character creation. The continuation of meditation and yoga supports their artistic practice.
On the completion of term two, actors have a more sophisticated understanding of technique and performance practices, with increased flexibility and imaginative range.
TERM 3
-
Actors hone their skills with professional directors in preparation to work in the industry. Actors practice the art of screen acting and auditioning and also explore American and British accents through international script work and monologues.
16th Street introduces graduating actors to the various facets of the industry through the expertise of prestigious industry mentors and the wisdom of our faculty. The training instils confidence in their approach to work, preparing actors for professional opportunities.
On the completion of term three, actors are grounded in their artistic methodology. They have a robust physical and vocal practice and a holistic foundation of acting technique and craft.
