YOUTH ACTING: AGES 11 - 13

JUNIOR PROGRAM

The Youth Acting Program is a four term training program.

At 16th Street, we believe that storytellers are vital. We are committed to supporting emerging young actors, to develop their artistic and communication skills. We provide the technical skills to enable young people to find joy in performance and to craft stories they are passionate about telling.

The Program has been designed specifically to take young actors on an exciting journey of self-discovery, self-empowerment and creativity. The acting program provides a foundation and prepares young people who wish to have a career in the film, theatre and television industries. It also provides young people with valuable life skills.

YEARLY BREAKDOWN

  • Over 8 weeks, actors will immerse themselves in a transformative approach combining The Actors Studio’s unique methods with Uta Hagen’s technique. The focus of this module is to give actors the freedom and confidence to experience and express the fullness of their emotional lives and perform scenes unselfconsciously.

  • Actors explore a detailed experience of the voice and the relationship to impulses, breath and articulation, which shape its physicality.

  • Actors are encouraged to build an economic connection between the body and voice, using energy and effort efficiently for a creative state of being. When actors develop an awareness of their body and voice, they are free to inhabit their characters more powerfully.

KESTIE MORASSI

Meet our Youth Program Lead, Kestie Morassi.

Kestie is one of Australia’s most prolific actors. Her career has seen her work steadily in the Australian Film and Television industry for over 30 years.

Her passion for teaching was ignited when she was invited to speak at the very first drama school, Melbourne Institution – Drama With A Difference, which she had attended some 20 years earlier. This resulted in her immediately being offered a full-time teaching position. She currently teaches at the renowned Patrick Studios in Prahran, SAE Film School, Swinburne, The Space, and is also head of the 16th Street Youth Program.

She teaches a diverse range of classes focussing on both on-screen and stage and directed performances for Fringe and The Comedy Festival.

Kestie believes that teaching has yielded some of her greatest personal rewards. She believes acting classes and the craft of acting translates immediately and profoundly into one’s everyday life boosting confidence, igniting and sustaining relationships and fuelling one’s imagination, empathy, self-discovery and ultimately self-love.

Kestie is a graduate of the 16th Street Actors Studio Full Time Program.

“What’s special about the 16th Street Youth Programs? They are designed to help young people understand their uniqueness as well as their shared humanity, to provide a safe and kind place where they can come to grips with their pain and joy, their strengths and weaknesses, and to support them in their desire to serve as storytellers. There are many acting schools, but very few which I can recommend wholeheartedly, especially for young people.” -Noni Hazlehurst Actor, Director & Producer
